This adventurous duo has a knack for uncovering breathtaking spots while road-tripping through Australia, and one of their latest escapade through Outback Queensland doesn’t disappoint. Watch Here.
Bonita and Dylan, the personalities behind the Instagram account Our Coasting Life and their popular YouTube channel, recently documented their journey from Cairns to the Northern Territory border. Along the way, they ticked off a series of free camping spots that blend rugged beauty, natural wonders, and community vibes, perfect for travellers chasing the quintessential Aussie adventure.
First Stop: Gulf Development Lookout
Their first stop was an unexpected delight: the Gulf Development Lookout, nicknamed “Million Dollar Views” by fellow WikiCamps reviewers. The journey up was a bit rough, but their trusty bus handled it with ease, and the payoff was spectacular. With sprawling vistas that live up to the nickname, this spot is ideal for self-contained travellers seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.
Leichhardt Falls: Crocs, Pools, and Scenic Bliss
Next, Bonita and Dylan headed to Leichhardt Falls, a spot accessible to all vehicle types but best experienced with a 4WD. The campground wraps around the falls, offering a range of options for parking and camping.
For those brave enough, the top pools provide the perfect spot for a refreshing dip - just be sure to avoid the lower pools, where the crocs prefer to hang out. As Bonita and Dylan shared, croc-watching from a safe distance is an exhilarating experience!
Gregory River Camp: Floaties and Fireside Magic
One of the standout highlights of their trip was Gregory River Camp. Free, fun, and full of character, this spot quickly became their favourite free camp. With river floats right at the campsite’s doorstep, Bonita and Dylan made the most of their stay, joining a lively group of fellow campers for a floating train down the river.
The camp also boasts convenient amenities, like water and a dump point nearby, making it a perfect place to settle in for a few days.
Final Stop in Queensland: Camooweal Billabong
As supplies ran low, the duo wrapped up their Queensland adventure at Camooweal Billabong, their last campsite before crossing into the Northern Territory. This spacious campsite offered plenty of spots along the water’s edge, where they enjoyed a breathtaking sunset amidst the abundant birdlife.
